Quick Tips: Oral Exam

  • Candidates admissible to the Oral Examination will have access to the Clinical Case Log
  • Online data collection of cases performed within a 9-month period, beginning July 1st
    • Do NOT include the following:
      • Voluntary surgical activity in developing countries.
      • Inpatient consultations on patients admitted by physicians on other services that did not culminate in a surgical procedure.
      • Assistant Surgeon cases billed by the candidate as an assistant surgeon.
      • Co-Surgeon cases in which the candidate is not the surgeon of record, and where the candidate did not provide a continuum of care from preop to postop.
      • Procedures for injectables and fillers such as Botox, Restylane, Sculptra, Radiesse, or other dermafillers.
      • Laser procedures for hair or tattoo removal.
      • The 9-month Oral Exam case submission cannot include cases from fellowship training.
  • Minimum requirement is 50 cases.  The case collection must meet the criteria of sufficient quality, complexity and variety of cases to allow for an equitable case report examination.  See Oral Examination section of Booklet of Information (for 2017 Oral Exam).
  • Obtain operative consent at the time of surgery.
  • Obtain patient photographic consent at the time of surgery.  Candidates are required to submit patient photographs for the 5 cases selected for the Case Report Session of the examination.

  • REQUIRED FOR SUBMISSION:
    • 2 copies of the printed case list with signed & notarized affidavits from each institution.
    • 1 Candidate Affidavit.
    • 2 copies of the Statistical Summary Report from the Clinical Case Log.
    • 1 letter confirming hospital privileges in plastic surgery which corresponds to the start of clinical surgical practice.  Must be dated in the year of the examination or include privilege start and end dates throughout the case collection and examination period.
    • 2 copies of ALL required advertising material.

  • After case lists are accepted and selected cases are identified to the candidates in July, the Reply Form will become available. 
  • An Announcement Letter, travel flyer, and the 5 Selected Cases will also be posted at this time.
  • REQUIRED:
    • Online Reply Form with credit card payment
    • All state medical licenses indicating expiration dates
    • All hospital appointment letters for privileges held during the case collection and examination process.  Letters must confirm active, inpatient admitting privileges in plastic surgery and identify the dates the privileges were in effect.
      • At least one letter must document privileges from the start of the case collection period through the Oral Examination date.
    • All accreditation certificates from non-hospital outpatient surgical facilities.

  • Case lists are reviewed upon submission and 5 cases are selected for examination preparation (Case Report Session).  Some case lists may be denied.  Notification is provided in July.
  • Email the Board Office at oral@abplasticsurgery.org no later than the Reply Form deadline if you have insufficient case report data such as deficiencies in documentation or missing photographs.  Additional cases for preparation may be assigned.
  • Online case report preparation instructions will be provided.

  • Travel and hotel information will be provided in July with the Announcement Letter, Reply Form and 5 Selected Cases.
  • For 10+ years, the examination has been held at the Pointe Hilton at Tapatio Cliffs Resort in Phoenix, AZ.

  • Candidates are advised to utilize every opportunity to complete the certification examinations. 
  • Candidates must successfully complete both the Written and Oral Examinations required to achieve certification within 8 years after completion of plastic surgery residency training.
  • Reapplication requirements must be fulfilled at the end of the first 5 years of admissibility (application approval).
